Smart or Skilled?

This is a blog post made by a pro dota player, Loda, that separates players into 2 categories.. the smart and the skilled.. both are good but the difference is too important to be taken for granted.

Ok so I had a pretty interesting discussion with bogdan the other day. Usually when the two of us get together to share some quality lovetime we end up discussing some part of DotA, and this time we discussed the kind of players there are, and the difference between some of the high lvl dotaplayers out there. We both agreed that there are two kind of players; Smart and Skilled.

Of course it's not that black and white with some players being only smart or only skilled, but it's easier to put them in two different groups. I will write down some stuff about each of the groups, but first I'll just list a couple of players that I think suits best in one or the other. Since I am not that into the asian scene I'll just list the ones from Europe and America that comes to mind, and maybe you guys can add some names of your own if you think im right in what I write.

So what deifnes a smart player? Well as the name states it's someone who's smart (No shit? :D), but what I mean is that they think through every move the make. Their farming, ganging and fighting is defined by what they know is the smartest in theory. A smart player is a person who skills a hero in a certain way just because it should be the best way to utilize the hero in the game. When it comes to itemchoices the smart player will go for what is absolutely the best for the hero and the team. For example a smart bm will always go for necro 3 since it works well with the pig/bird and then BoT to easier gang the lanes with ultimate. If you watch LightOfHeaven play Bm you will realise that when he throws axes to dmg heroes he often(if not always) also hits a couple of creeps or neutrals just to utilize the power of axes to its fullest. The smart player knows what is the best, but things doesn't come as easy for them. They often need play more to reach the same lvl as the skilled player but when they do it's a very scary player to face since they play it safe, smart and use each hero in the way that's right 90% of the time.

Skilled: The skilled player is the kind of guy that does not give a shit to what people say is the right build or in what kind of way you should play. These players are genuine players that has a love for the game and for them it's as easy to play dota as it is to ride a bike! Sometimes they know that in theory their choice is the wrong one, but it just feels right and usually pays off into a godlike moment :) Vigoss is the obvious choice as this kind of player. How many times didn't vigoss go on a suicide run just to grab that kill? Often he would even get out of an impossible position where no one even saw what happened ^^ Some players evolve into smart players just to better help the team, because you need to keep in mind that without a couple of smart players that reads the game in the right way to help you do those crazy moves it woldn't happen. I for one was never a big fan of Vigoss, more of those who played around him and made it all work out in the masterpiece that was their playstyle!

Vigoss DotA Fun Facts

Vigoss can play a 60 minutes game for 20.

When MYM|H4nn1- goes to sleep, he checks for Vigoss in the closet.

When SK watched one of Vigoss' replays, they decided to forfeit just to be on the safe side.

It is rumoured that Vigoss is very strong 1v1. Unfortunately, there are no survivors to confirm this.

If, by some paradox of time and space, Vigoss plays against himself, Vigoss will win. Period.

If you have 1000 gold and Vigoss has 1000 gold, he has more gold than you.

Vigoss does not kill Roshan. He just stares him to death, breaks the Aegis because he doesn't need it, and gives the cheese to the enemy. After all, it's always more fun if they die slower.

You don't gang Vigoss. You just give him more gold from hero kills.

Vigoss can dodge Chain Lightning. Without moving.

LightOfHeaven is just another account of Vigoss - he uses it for casual, relax games.

Once, SK.Loda decided to play 1v1 against Vigoss. It took him only three weeks to get a hold on himself and stop crying.

Ice Frog made a special, customized version of dota especially for Vigoss. In the menu, he replaced "stop", "attack", "move" and "patrol" with "kill", "farm", "help teammates" and "destroy base".

Sometimes, Vigoss allows the enemy players to kill him, just to give them some hope. Unfortunately, it never works.

In one of these instances, when he decided to let the enemy team kill him, he had to chase all five of them to their fountain. It became a real problem, when the fountain was so scared that it forgot to attack. When they saw this, they forfeited the game.

Once, Vigoss sent an illusion to scout the enemy base. It almost destroyed the World Tree.

Vigoss can hook himself with Butcher - from maximum range. In fog of war.

Vigoss doesn't have to lasthit creeps. They die out of sheer respect.

According to legend, once the world's strongest players challenged Vigoss to play against them, controlling five different heroes on his own. He never did it again, claiming that it was too easy.

If you leave from a game against Vigoss, you are not a leaver. It's just common sense.

Vigoss does not get stunned. The stun gets Vigossed.

Once, Vigoss decided to play in the finals of MYM Prime defending blindfolded. He made only three triple kills. Later on, people accused him of using headphones. He apologized.

If Vigoss had a little sister, she would be better at dota than you are.

Vigoss isn't God, but God isn't Vigoss either.

Vigoss can maim with yasha.

Some days ago ARS-ART said to Vigoss: "Dude i think you need to...". The same minute, ARS-ART moved to SK.

When Vigoss picks up rune, it lasts for the whole game.

Vigoss doesn't need warcraft to play dota.
When Vigoss buys Kelen's, it's not Dagger of Escape - it's Dagger of Attack.
Vigoss plays Butcher with Basher and owns MYM players. (fact!)
In the morning, Vigoss gets up, eats breakfast, wins MYM Prime Defending and a couple of other tournaments, then he goes for a walk in the park.
Once upon a time, Vigoss made Burize and MKB with Zeus and the enemy players laughed at him. They stopped laughing when he began to crit them.
Originally, the item Aegis of the Immortal was named Aegis of the Vigoss. They decided it would be too imba, nerfed it and changed the name.
Rumour has it that Vigoss has a microchip in his brain, which allows him to give telepathic commands to his PC.
When they asked Vigoss about these rumours, he laughed and said "I don't need a microchip to do this."
Vigoss receives money from leading hardware companies, as he is the second main cause for damaged keyboards after spilled coffee.
Vigoss can kill a dead hero.
Vigoss is so fast, he can run around the whole map and hit himself in the back.

Vigoss is so good that his skill often causes paradoxes, leaving scientists baffled. Because of this, they created a special branch of physics, called "Vigossdynamics". We already wrote some of its principles, here are the others:

Vigoss, multiplied by time, equals destruction.
Vigoss, divided by games played, equals N gallons of gamer tears.
The fabric of the time-space continuum can only sustain one Vigoss (barely).
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. However, if Vigoss is one of the parts, he is greater than the whole.
The damage, dealt by Vigoss in a battle, amounts to infinity plus one.
Vigoss, multiplied by zero, equals Vigoss, because nothing can nerf Vigoss.
Vigoss, multiplied by infinity, equals Vigoss, because nothing is bigger than Vigoss.
According to Newton's Law, every action has an equal by strength and opposite by direction reaction. Vigoss proved this wrong, because when he attacks someone, there is never a reaction. Dead heroes don't react.
Vigoss can divide by zero.
Vigoss has counted to infinity - twice.

Here is the replay for Pudge with Basher on MYM Nations

Dota History in Naga City

Legendary Team Inzane

In the year 2007, when DotA was still fresh and is in it's earliest version, a group of skilled players led by a very intelligent player--Ivan Deterala manifest strategical way of playing this game.  They were the Legendary and most respected Team Inzane.  They exhibited perfect execution of combo strategies that wipes out the entire enemy with a single blow.  They have themselves fighting and winning DotA tournaments back then.  Experiencing defeats make them better because they have the incredible talent of formulating and implementing new strategies to avenge themselves.  They have a perfect chemistry as players and individuals.  After replay sessions and having battle plans, they go out and face anyone.  They became the image of unstoppable force in the region.

Mejai the Legend Slayer
Legendary Mejai

While Team Inzane is considered to be the scariest team in the region, a chinese guy named Jaime Concepcion came from Manila to Naga.  He started showing great skills in the game.  Because of his love for the game, he went to many computer shops to play.  Players in Naga City was so amazed with his ability to carry a team singlehandedly to victory.  I heard people giggling upon seeing this chinese fat guy.  The weird thing is they're all guys.  He even had a record of winning a 1v5 match.

Then he entered JTSI, the shop where Team Inzane are playing.  He was brought by Codz Dy here and introduced him to team Inzane.  Then, game time.  Mejai with random players vs Team Inzane.  He picked Necrolyte.  His team mates, random players in the shop, picked their best heroes too.  Then the legendary Team Inzane played with combo strategy.  Then, Mejai finally lost.  He didn't even have the chance to show his skills because of the great strategy and team work of Team Inzane.

Nobody knows that this Chinese Fat Guy is the Armageddon sent to put an end to Team Inzane.  Mejai, who was challenged because of his despicable defeat, planned to form a team with Codz.  Codz being a very friendly person knew players who have potencial at the game.  Tan-tan Osea, my idol in CD6 when I was still noob, joined forces with the chinese team.  Then, it didn't take long to form a group of 5.  Thanks to Codz, TJ was born.

The Historical Match Inzane vs TJ

Mejai, now having the power to lead his team mates, shows his strategical hero picking.  He countered the Remarkable Chen of inz.Vanz with Codz's Earthshaker.  It was the first time Earthshaker was introduced with blink dagger here.  Mejai used Queen of Pain to escape the deadly combo of Inzane and for greater clash damage too.  Though Mejai's team mates were considered to be underdogs back then, Mejai brought confidence to his team.  He farmed so fast.  He got his Eyes of Skadi so quickly that made him carry his team easier.  I was so amazed how he blinks behind the 5 Inzane to confuse them. He is so brave that his team mates got confidence to perfectly set up their clash fights.  Then at the end of the game, TJ defeated Inzane.

It was a good thing though because Inzane would be challenged to be become better. TJ became the strongest team in Naga City.

Sean: Mejai's Worst Nightmare
Mejai Slayer Sean
Sean Ronan is really the worst nightmare of Mejai.  Sean was just a normal player.  He wasn't even part of Inzane.  But Mejai's Era didn't last long because of this clever player.  Sean doesn't farm fast like Mejai.  He doesn't kill 3 to 5 heroes in one clash.  He simple gangs.  In the tournaments where TJ would defeat Inzane, Sean would always be there to beat TJ.  Soon I found out that Sean joined Mejai's team.  I don't know what happened but I guess it's the best choice for Mejai to join him because he can't beat him. (lol).  So I guess Mejai recruited sean offering sean a burger.  TJ disbanded and became Team Mej.

Team Neydz

Team Neydz was led by me.  It was a team me and my josephean friends to join Rockstah Tournament.  We knew we had no chance against top teams but we wanted to get better so we joined.  I was a student of the Inzane, inz.oOpz.  He taught me not by teaching me everything step by step.  He always bring me to JTSI where skilled players are playing.  So I tried to develop a team of my own.

We joined tournaments having hero picks based on what was strong during our pub games.  I don't want to copy other teams' hero picks so we fought them with our own strats.  I have players with great potentials but
we lack experience because we were shy to play at JTSI.

Team XO
xo.xet, xo.jak, xo.atit
This is the team that destroyed Team Mej.  Not by another 'Dota Pro' but by teamwork.  Team XO was formed after team Neydz was disbanded.  Mathew 'Pangkoi' Largo changed his heart to the game Perfect World.  Adonis disappeared for unknown reason.  Ramaida Computer Shop with more than 40 computers brought all teams together in one place but we were down to 3 members.  Me, xet, and jan.  We tried fighting Team Mej, having 2 random players.  We were raped so hard.  We found Jestoni 'Jes' Bamba, a good farmer.  We tried facing team Mej again, we were raped again.  Then, we found the Almighty Francis 'Atit' King.

We faced team Mej with our complete rosters.  The 4 of us was intimidated by thinking that we are facing a strong team.  We were fighting like cowards.  Atit speaks words that made us fight.  We still lost but it was starting to be a good fight. 2nd and 3rd game we lost again but on the 4th game, XO defeated Team Mej.  Then we win most of the games against them, inzane and any other teams. We have great potencials but we just lacked confidence before.  Jan is a great ganker with perfect timing skills.  Xet has a very quick hands and mind.  Jes is a very fast famer.  Atit has great clash ability.  XO was unstoppable because of team play.

Team ITSME
itsme won 2nd spot at Netopia Nationwide Tournament

XO disbanded because of these reasons:  I got my own internet connection at home.  I don't go out anymore I just play DotA at home using Garena.  Xet doesn't want to play garena because of quitters.  Jan focused on studies.  When garena was accepted by people in Naga, they started using it.  Alton 'kwKy' Aguilar started to play with some of ex team Mej and ex team XO.  Then they dominated the bayantel rooms.  I was playing at pldt room but I told them that I am going to make a clan in garena.  Let's change our gg ID's.  I named it ITSME based from Atit's playmate in starcraft.

ITSME is a clan of friends.  Any of our friends are part the team.

We formed a team to participate in Netopia Tournament and ended up 2nd place nationwide.

After that game, many of us, including myself, retired and will just play the game when we have free time.  kwkY was training in Manila so I gave the leadership to DESO who was a new member of itsme back then.  I saw great potential in him but he doesn't have that much experience leading a team so ITSME was on its way being disbanded.  But kwKy came back, revive and improved ITSME to being a PRO team.  Being a complete player and leader, kwKy proved to the people that ITSME is the best team in Naga City.

DotA Strategies Learned and Experienced

After playing dota for more than 5 years I have seen a lot of dota strategies... I want to enumerate them and I hope people with great minds could add more..
(i named them based on their nature of play)
itsme.kwKy and itsme.xEt's battle plan

1. Mass Disable Strategy

--- This strategy begins with the heroes themselves. You pick heroes that stuns, slows, holds, or silences enemy heroes that result the opposing heroes to be useless even though they farmed up a lot. This strategy have 3-5 heroes with a lot of disable.

line up e.g.
potm
es
shadow shaman
naix
lion

2. Combo Strategy

--- This strategy is an old one. All 5 heroes would have a typical combo to wipe out the entire enemy team in one execution. The heroes in this strategy usually contain deadly aoe ultimates.

line up e.g.
sandking
cm
krobelus
enigma
trent protector

3. Gank and Farm Strategy

--- There will be a hitter(heroes that rely on normal attack dps) hero to wipe out the entire team and there will be supports to gang bang the enemy heroes that are harassing the carry hero/es of the team.

line up e.g.
sandking
lina
tinker
chen
spec <=== the carry

4. Nuke Strategy

--- This is what the pros are doing in 6.48b era. They don't rely on having a main hitter on their team. I called it nuke strategy because all of the heroes have skills that are painful. Disablers are there too basically to set up the play. Usually the play here is owning the opponent as early as at their lanes.

line up e.g.
es
zeus
atro
puck
enigma

5. Turtling Strategy

--- This is somewhat the same with gank and farm strategy only that this strategy doesn't rely on killing the enemy to have their carry farmed up.. The strategy is to delay the enemies on their pushes by killing all the creeps that would tank the tower. I know this won't work to pros but it's effective if combined with other strats.

line up e.g.
tms
es
pitlord
terrorblade
thd
(noob line up huh? i made it pure turtling with a carry hero)

6. Axe Early Ownage

--- This strategy requires... axe?.. lol.. Axe is accompanied with a healer(warlock usually) and another hero to support him. They positioned at the strong lanes of the opponent ahead the 1st tower. This strategy is made to delay the opponents level and also to push early and let the team enjoy the gold. Then, axe will do this on every towers one by one.. I'm sure you watched a game like this..

line up e.g.
playing scourge
top: solo zeus
mid: tinker
bot: axe cm wl

7. Triple Push

--- I saw this once executed very well by MYM.. It was when dagger was still available even when you're being damaged. This strategy requires heroes who have skills that wipe out enemy creeps fast. 1st you would push all the outer towers together.. then, decide on who are the hero/es that will push the top lane, mid lane, and bottom lane. This strategy is deadly back in 6.48b. The heroes would clear up every lane's creep then the enemy heroes will defend a lane, if they are defending e.g. bottom lane, the heroes on top and mid lanes will proceed with damaging the tower.. then back if the enemy respond.. then do it again.. slowly, you are destroying all they're towers. I remember the time when our team imitated this strategy, our enemies quit. This strategy is helpful when having opponents that possess deadly aoe ultimates.. They can use it but not on the entire team.. and while they're executing it, their towers are being destroyed.. but be sure to farm for buy outs and travel to continue pushing.. ;)

line up e.g. (from MYM)
zeus
BM
wl
tms
sandking
you can watch this replay here

8. The Level 1 Roshan Kill

--- This strategy is to have level and money advantage along with the aegis of immortal for one hero.. It's dangerous though and can easily be countered by placing observer ward early near roshan's den. :D

line up e.g. (from ks.int)
bm
engima
zeus
lich
sf
you can watch it here http://www.gosugamers.net/dota/replays/20236

9. 3-1-1 Strategy

---This strategy is called 3-1-1 because there would be 2 lanes with solo hero, mid and another lane. Then 1 lane will have 3 heroes in it. This strategy has 2 purpose. Number 1 purpose of this strategy is early game domination. The lane with 3 heroes will easily dominate the lane having more nukes and disables in the lane. The other 2 solo heroes enjoy leveling up quickly. The other purpose of 3-1-1 strategy is turtling. The carry hero in this lane will be safe creeping because he is guarded by 2 supports that have disables ready to save him.

line up e.g.

(sentinel)

qop - top

sf - mid

sven, cm, wd - bot

DotA is really the coolest game ever.

There are so many more strategies in DotA but it's impossible for me to know them all.

My Personal View on the Game Style of my Team Mates

This is a little observation on my teammates' play styles and a little comparison between some professional dota players.

itsme.titi

Our team's main Assassin

Ganking is my favorite job for itsme.titi. His ganking ability made Team ITSME a traumatic experience for those who tried playing with us. He will make sure that his team mates will have an advantage on all lanes. He will also assure less gold for enemies. The enemies on the lane will be like "omg, he's here, back to tavern". The only problem is that he hates seeing heroes escape with about 10hp left. He will chase him wherever he goes and whatever it takes. This is why i compare his playstyle with Vigoss. A great ganker but wont leave anything left on his plate.

I consider itsme.titi a good carry too. There are a lot of players who farms well than titi. But you can see his items always full when he plays carry. After being his team mate for more than 3 years, I can say that he has a total clash awareness. I consider him "King of Team Fights". He would always have a double, triple kill or more. He would kill all enemies and you would see him go back to base with very low hp. He is a rambo who doesn't die. That is where he farm his items. From enemy heroes. Great Clash Awareness and Ganking ability make him Team ITSME main Assassin.

itsme.kwKy

Our team's main carry

I can compare his playstyle with misery. He is precise in measuring damage outputs, cool downs, etc. He farms fast. He outlast hits his opponent on the lane. Solo lane is best for him. When this guy is noisy while playing, it is a sure win. He takes pride with his Shadow Fiend. He wont let any team beat his SF easily. If a rylai ganked his SF. The next event you'll see is a rylai eating all the souls from SF's requiem. kwKy is a very cautious player. If you are not a skilled ganker, it is impossible for you to gank this guy. He has this imagination on heroes that are missing. Accompanied with observer wards, he's god. His fast farm and ability to dominate a solo lane is what made him ITSME main carry.

itsme.Nahs

Our team's main Superstar

Before anything else, I would make this clear.

There are two itsme.Nahs in one body.

The old Nahs(And dating sean) and the new Nahs(ang feeder na sean)

I can compare the old Nahs to KuroKy for having a perfect predicting and farming ability.

I can compare the new Nahs to a delicious meal for having a perfect feeding ability.

I'll tell you more about the old Nahs. This guy has a lot of strategies in his mind. He had told me one but I wont write it here of course. I share my strategies but not others' strats. Itsme.Nahs(old) is so hard to kill. He would play with you with his puck. He can almost dodge anything. He has this great ability of damaging enemies a lot before the enemy can even touch him. His POTM is accused to be maphacking for his blind arrows. His axe makes enemies quit for too much irritation in their minds. His Viper wont make you sleep at night. He is a player who is always calm. He just laughs at it when he dies. His ability to read minds is what made him ITSME main superstar

itsme.Ldrige

Our team's main support

I can compare his playstyle with the asian Papaxiong.

A perfect support player who can serve a main pest to opponents on the lane. He would do Merlini moves that would lead to chasing opponents getting lost in the forest. Ldrige on support means high level of game for team ITSME.

itsme.dyz

Our team's main farmer

His play style is same with that of Loda. This is the only player in ITSME who can die a lot but would shock you with his items. Ganking is not an option when fighting against him. He is the fastest farmer in the team and if you want to beat ITSME when his around, be sure you can match the farm of an accused gold hacker. Oh, 1 more thing. When there's bet on the game, he even gets better. Maybe because he is looking forward to farming your money too xD. Being an insurance of winning makes him itsme main farmer.

itsme.CK

I can say he is our LightOfHeaven in the team. He is a fast farmer but was obliged to change role into support. So, now I can say that when you saw him play crystal maiden, expect us not losing map control because he always have plenty of wards bought. Also, expect to feel rylai's Aganims with blink.

itsme.Kawaii

Another solid player of itsme. You can see him in a lane rarely. He would be all around the map, ganking. OS|StalCat of OS team resembles much of his playstyle. Lane in the beginning, then, nonstop ganking follows.

itsme.shitty^Gk

He is our team's Hexor. The reason would be because of having a lot of amazing moves in the game. He would dodge echo slam with his wave form. He would have double kills with no assists. He would juke while regenerating and finish you off if you don't kill him fast. He would predict your next move before you even think of it. He is also one of the fastest farmer in the team. Tip: If you want to live when you're laning with this guy, be very alert. One wrong move, you're a dead meat for shitty.

itsme.funky^Dg

He is our team's MaNia. He would catch you all in his impale once he have dagger. You would feel his epicenter before you know he's there. A good ganker. Heroes with disables pushed his potentials to maximum. He would play few bad games after not playing for more than a week. Then, after regaining his strats in his mind, the real game begins."

itsme.DESO

He is a farm machine too. Though i see his potentials in melee heroes more, he is proving that he can farm fast too using range heroes. I can compare him with JohnnyUtah because of being a melee hero master. I admire JohnnyUtah's PL and Yurnero but not his range heroes. DESO is a player whom I think would be better than all of us in the future. Only that he still lack experience now. For now, most of us think of DESO as a pure farmer who fight when he's already equipped with sick items.

itsme.KAI

He is one of the most improved player among my team mates. He does well in carry role. He's more of the player Jolie. He plays very good games and does very bad ones too. When he plays his "very good game" he can carry a not-so-strong team to victory.

itsme.sneaT (whattaface)

My favorite team mate. Know why? He would obey any command I say. He trust the leader so much that he would fight the enemy fountain if I say so. He is an ex-carry player who is now a good support player. I'm a fan of his Bane Elemental who can sleep enfeeble zap grip in less than 2 seconds then smoke while his hero is gripping another hero. Watch out too. When you see an itsme.sneaT on a hero. I assure you, the hero is not as soft as you think. His rylai have vanguard defiance and so with other heroes. I can't compare his playstyle to any players because I don't know who is the best follower among all the pro teams.

itsme.Mejz (Litz Gaming na to ngayon pero lagay ko pa rin)

The one who started PRO gaming in Naga City. He organized a team to beat the reigning best team, Team Inzane. He was the most popular Dota player in Naga City back then. People in and outside Naga City would be shivering in fear just hearing the name ...... MEJAI!!!!.... His play style can be associated with Snoy. Enemies on his lane would be under-level because of his sick harassing skills. Enemies facing him on his lane will surely be "baog" or infertile xD. He will farm his basic items so fast and would gank everyone. With his fast hands and his alertness, he is so hard to kill. Before you can kill his hero, he would be having an Ultra Kill first. His qop is invincible. His SF is a killing machine.

Oh, that was before. Mejz today not that skilled anymore. He is into gay games and level-up games that make him less alert in dota. I'm amazed how slow his farming is today. However, if he play Dota seriously again, he can match even known PRO asian players.

itsme.oOpz

He may not be one of the strongest player but he is the only one here in Naga City that can make my knee shake. This is because of his High IQ. His observations are critically superb and his plans are simple but most of the time deadly. His playstyle, in opinion, is like that of the retired MYM|slahser. He doesn't farm that fast but he is going to surprise you after he won a battle of skilled hero vs fat hero. He has a great lane as well as clash awareness. Although he's not that good today anymore, I still see him as the wisest player i've ever played with.
