31 Reasons of Dota Addiction

Everyday there are hundreds of new addicted DotA(Defense of the Ancients) players and I have no idea when this growth will stop.  Many players are also retiring but new players are exponentially more than the retired players.  From kids to professionals, they can all be addicted to this game.  This game is one brilliant creation by Ice Frog that causes tons of tournaments giving cash prizes.  Some people are called "Professional Players" because they are already paid for playing for a certain team sponsored by companies or industries.  Why is Dota so Addicting?

1.  A Time Killer:  Boredom is the most common problem of most people today.  Dota can consume a lot of time without you even noticing it.  You'll just say "wtf I'm late!" after the game.

2.  Non-exhausting Game: Unlike Basketball or other physical sports, you can play Dota 'til you can still manage to sit, look at the monitor, use mouse and keyboard, and think.  Yes, using your mind is also tiring but it'll take an average of 3 games before you'd want to take a rest.

3.  Fame Source:  Most players want to be the best in this game to gain fame which I find natural but technically nonsense.  I have to admit that thirst for fame drove me to practice and improve my game.  After getting the fame I wanted, I asked myself "Now what?".  For players who don't plan on having Dota as their profession, Fame isn't that important.

4.  Team Work Game:  When we were kids we already love having team battles.  That's why a lot of team sports came up and multi-player computer games have been invented.  Playing with team mates is more addicting than playing alone.

5.  Tranquilizing:  Dota makes you forget your problems and make you think of simpler problem - how to win.

6.  Non-violent war:  We love wars.  That's why there are shows like Wrestling, UFC, Action Films, etc.  Dota is a chance to engage in wars safely.  We can fight all day long and just stand up from our computer without even having a scratch.

7.  Topic Provider:  Dota is a great topic provider.  That's why you talk about it while hanging out with your dota buddies.  That's why there are forums and blogs like this.  We love chatting and Dota is a great topic to talk about.

8.  Sweet Sound Effects:  "Rampage!!!" - How sweet that sound is?  This sound effect is unconsciously a source of self-affirmation.  Everyone loves to be praised and accepted.  Dota can be a source of this.

9.  Easy to Play:  Survey shows that Dota is played by more people than other strategy games like Starcraft.  One of the reason is it's simplicity.  You only have to control one hero - a great news for people who are not into doing micros.

10.  Total Freedom:  In Dota, you have all the freedom to do anything you wish.  You can gank, farm, lane top, lane mid, lane bot, buy items you wish, you can even annoy your team mates if you wish.  It is like an alternative for people who doesn't that much freedom in their real lives.

11.  Mind Exercise:  Intelligent people love exercising their minds.  This is the reason why crossword puzzles, Rubic's cube, and other mind games are created.  Dota also have this feature needing analysis, prediction and decision making.

12.  Physically safe:  People care about their safety.  In my case, I don't jump that much in Basketball because I hate landing on another player's foot and causing my ankles to be sprained.  I don't want to try Rugby, Boxing, UFC and other dangerous sports because I care about my safety.  Dota, on the other hand, doesn't offer dangerous injury.  Eye problems may occur though but it's still avoidable.  Just give your time proper rest and use low radiation monitors.

13.  Game Variations:  Every game is different.  You buy different items, you lane against different opponents, you have different combos, you pick different heroes, you plan different attacks, etc.  Variation is important to stay addicted on something.  Nobody would want to do same things over and over again.

14.  Source of Money:  Money is becoming the goal of every humans.  Poker won't be popular if you can't gain money from it.  Dota have been used for betting games and tournaments; obviously, money is involved.

15.  Ability to feel like having supernatural skills:  We all love to have supernatural skills.  In Dota, we have it.  Just pick the hero that possess the skill you want.  You want to teleport?  You want to be invisible?  Do you want to cast lightning on a person? It's all in Dota Allstars.

16.  Tool for anger discharge:  Dota can be the place where you release your anger.  You can pick a killer hero, make it monster-like, then kill everyone you see.

17.  Varieties of Skills to improve at:  You can improve at farming, ganking, supporting, killing, teamwork, using different heroes, combos, etc.  These are the things that will cause you to be practicing and improving.  More skills learned means more addiction.  More skills to be learned also means more addiction.

18.  Character's Appearance:  Dota Characters' appearances are made with great imagination.  Dota Fan arts spread in the internet showing their appreciation in the Heroes' appearances.  Cool arts and animations add to the addicting potion of this game.

19.  Constant Map Improvement:  Just when you learned enough strategies for you to be called a Dota genius, here comes another new map with new items and heroes.  Now, your learned strategies need upgrade.  You need to study, try and analyze new stuffs again making you more into the game.

20.  Professional Gamers as Inspiration:  Watching pro dota gamers execute strategies perfectly make you want to be like them.  You will be training more after getting inspired by these Pro Dota players and teams.

21.  Peer Pressure:  Right when you don't feel like playing, here comes a Dota Buddy saying: "It's weekend let's play!" or while you're at home, you got a "Buzz!!" followed by the word "rak".  How can you ever forget playing if these peer temptations are all around you?

22.  Game illusion:  While playing Dota, the map becomes your world and your hero becomes you.  Feeling a different world which is more fun and breath-taking is way better than your old room with old stuffs.  When the game's world is experienced, your mind would be constantly searching for that more pleasurable world making you really addicted.

23.  It's haunting:  This game haunts you.  While you're in your classroom, you kept on thinking why you lost or how great your game was.  You would then be thinking of playing Dota as soon as you arrive at the computer shop or at home.  You would also think of what hero you would play or what play style you're going to have.

24.  Winning Feels Good:  Yup, feeling good is really addicting.

25.  Losing makes you thirsty to win:  On the other hand, losing is still addicting because you become more urge to have that wonderful feeling of winning.

26.  No height or other physical disadvantage:  In basketball you cannot have a team composed of 5 short players.  In Rugby, you should be muscular.  In Dota, you can be as thin and short as you want and still own everyone.

27.  A balanced game:  Since banning was introduced in Dota Allstars, I considered it to be a balanced game.  Having a balanced game, you wouldn't think of quitting while whining "unfair!".

28.  A vast number of strategies:  More strategies means more trial and errors.  More trial and errors means more games.  "More games" means more game illusions.  More game illusions means more chance to be trapped in the world of Dota.

29.  Merely being a Strategy Game is addicting:  Strategy games are so fun because it offers unpredictability.

30.  No age limit:  Yup, no age limit is a cause of Dota Addiction.  Many players should be practicing their professions in real life but they are still stuck in Dota world.

31.  Opportunity to become a Hero:  It is so pleasurable to be feel like a hero.  It is like hitting a buzzer beater in a basketball game or saving a kid from getting hit by a car.  The appreciation is simply awesome.  Self-esteem boosts quickly and exponentially with this.

Pinoy Haters: 3 Main Reasons Why They Hate Us

I am active in a popular Dota website, Gosugamers.net, for more than a year already.  Back then, I never encountered anyone hating Filipino Dota gamers this much.  Now, whenever a pinoy post in a forum or blog, wait for 10 minutes and when you refresh, tons of haters posted their insults on that pinoy gamer.  I was shocked because it wasn't like this before.  I experienced a lot of haters though I post useful stuffs.  They are totally disgusted with us, Pinoys.

I researched for hours WHY.  I came up with a forum asking the same question.  I also analyzed the views of those haters why they hated Filipinos.  I came up with these conclusions:

1. They said that Pinoys have bad manners.

This is the main reason why they hated us that much.  The forum I found was a Hon forum.  Other citizens who are playing this game online get so pissed off with Pinoys because they would always trash talk if they are winning and blame team mates for losing.

Here are some quoted replies from the forum:

DarkMegaPot:
"I'm Half Pinoy and Half Chinese But Not Those Immature People To Tell You The Truth I got tired of pinoys trash talks it makes me distracted and they feel highly excellent they "IM PRO PLAYING HON" etc2 seriously if that's pinoy would act then good thing i ain't 1 of them
and 1 thing if someone say to me are you pinoy i would shut myself up and change topic cause i won't show my pinoy self which would rage out the players"
ArcticShadow:
"Sadly, i have played with SOOOO many pinoys and every single one i meet, are total thrash talkers and the kind that always give excuses when they somehow fail.
I mean we understand that you PINOYS fail.. well most of the time but when u do u can at least ADMIT to it and say sorry or something. but NOOOO u go.. u NOOB. u idiot.. BOBO, MOLMOL, tangina. TANGA. dunno wtf all that means but hey.. i guess its some retarded bad words in tagalok. or however u spell PINOY language.
For example, i just got out of a game with a pinoy (his name was Babs - thats a dum name btw) who wanted to SOLO mid so badly and wouldnt let anyone else even though it was called out first. then he fails mid to hammerstorm SOOO badly and then when we question him. he starts blaming. oh no wards. oh lag. oh no one help gank. i mean FFS stop acting retarded and just say SORRY IM A GOD DAM NOOB PINOY.
so for all u pinoy thrash talkers. im sorry.. but seriously.. time to grow up.. stop thinking of yourselves as the BEST in the game just cause the top 2 player ladder players are pinoys.. so like..
Ill-mannered pinoys. gtfo. =D"

I can't blame them for hating us.  It is really irritating when you treat the game as your fun time, then you get trash talks from your opponents.  I am pleading to all Filipino Gamers to stop this and play the game professionally.  Avoid flaming opponents and team mates.

2.  They said Pinoys are trolls.

A troll is person who posts on forums or other form of online communication to disrupt or cause widespread argument.  In this case, I think trolling is not always the main reason why Pinoys posted the posts others consider 'trolls'.  Most pinoys are trolls by accident.  This is just a product of carelessness of Pinoys.  There may be real trolls but I believe that there are only few.

We need to be more careful with our posts to prevent being called trolls.

3.  They said Pinoys are idiots.

Idiot is a very painful word.  They even relate the term pinoy to idiot.  How did this happen?  Most people in the internet forums are geeky and quite experienced in the field they are posting in.  There are a lot of Pinoy gamers who are minors.  With their young age, they would really ask simple question which irritates people reading that question.  They even had Pinoy Filter suggestion on Gosugamers.

These 3 reasons were enough to drive them angry at us.  They included other things why they hated us like Bottle-Crow Strategy, Crab Mentality, Not good looking, etc.  I know they won't hate us just because of these simple reasons.  They really got pissed off because of those 3 views they have on Pinoys.

It's not too late, let us not put this country in hated list.  Let us be more aware of our actions, particularly when interacting internationally.

Latest Dota Tips and Facts

Some facts about healing.

1. Drop the items which increase your HP/mana -> heal/regen -> pick them up again. This will increase the actual amount you regenned (e.g. you have 400/750 HP and a Vitality Booster. Drop it and your HP becomes 400/500, drink a Salve to make it 500/500 and pick the item up for 750/750. )
2. Urn heal doesn't stack with Tango/Salve heal
3. Casting the positive Urn buff (healing) on a unit that has the negative one negates both effects (0 HP lost).
4. Due to the damage mechanic of Pudge's Rot, both the victim and Pudge can heal with Salve/Clarity/etc. while under the effect of level 1/2/3 Rot. Doesn't work with level 4 though.
5. Repeatedly selecting your hero while healing at the fountain doesn't make him/her heal faster.

As Pugna's second attack is Magic type, it is possible to attack Decripified units if you have Sange/Sange and Yasha/Desolator/Orb of Slow. However, you will not deal extra damage (your attack is resisted by magic resistance, which by default is 75%).

Some Random DotA Facts

By silencing Rikimaru you make him visible. Rikimaru will stay visible as long as he is silenced.

Focus Fire(Windrunner) can hit invisible enemy units if Windrunner uses it before the enemy goes invisible.

When Huskar and Necro's ulti are both boosted by sceptre, it is possible to instant kill anyone.

Medusa's split shot uses a bear form spell as base with a transformation time of 0.1 seconds just like Troll Warlord, because of that you are also able to dodge disables with switching it on/off.
(For those who doesn't know, you can avoid storm bolt or any similar skills with Troll's transformation, and so do Medusa)
[Added fact to the transformation technique: That fact is also the same for Alchemist's Chemical Rage transformation]

Vision Mechanics

We all now how important vision is in DotA so in order to master it here are some facts and tips:
Basics:
- Heroes have a normal sight range of 1800 at daytime and 800 at nighttime.
- Hero vision is obstructed by cliffs and trees.

Night

[Red arrows represent sight range extent.]
Now not all heroes have the same sight range, there are some heroes with a special sight range and they are:
(Note: Hero title, vision range at day/vision range at night)
  • Enchantress, 1800/1800
  • Sniper, 1800/1000
  • Treant Protector, 1800/1200
  • Bounty Hunter, 1800/1000
  • Alchemist, 1800/1400
  • Priestess of the Moon, 1800/1200
  • Faerie Dragon, 1800/1200
  • Tormented Soul, 1800/900
  • Night Stalker, 1200/1800
  • Geomancer, 1800/1800
  • Ancient Apparition 1800/1400
  • Nightcrawler 1800/1800
- Flying Units have an unobstructed vision (not hindered by trees or the terrain).
- Vision on higher cliffs is higher, while vision on the bottom of the cliff becomes obstructed.

Fog of War

- The blackened areas or areas that are at the extent of your heroes sight range.
- The fog of war is increased during the night, hence vision is also lessened.

Phantom Spot

The Phantom Spot is the area within Roshan's Lair.
- It is unaffected by the terrain so even if you are on the top cliff you will still not see beyond it.

[Compare it with the sample from the top cliff vision range and you would see the difference.]

- Even if you get nearer you will still not be able to see beyond it

- Vision is also limited once you are inside it.

Fact:
- Observer Wards cannot be placed on Roshan's Lair (prior to the new map)

Critical Strike and Bash stacking.

[Well more preferably called Critical Strike stacking since we all know that Bash doesn't really stack]
Now regarding Critical strike many have thought that two items and/or skills giving the Critical Strike bonus would proc at the same time, this is a big NO in DotA.

But how does that work if that's the case? Both items would still have a chance to proc on
separate attacks if in case both items would trigger on the same time, only the latest acquired item would proc on that attack. This is also the same case for items and abilities with Bash bonuses.

More to Come!
